How thirsty is an Elm Bonsai?
For Easter the mother of my fiance got an elm bonsai and yesterday she went off to brussels with my fiance for a celebration, and she asked me to water it, I would say this tree is about 4.5 - 5 inches tall and has I'd say at most 3 cups of soil in a rectangular ceramic pot about 3 inches deep. She was told to keep it outside (By the way I'm in Central Italy and it has a south eastern facing terrace and gets at least 8 hours of full sunshine every day) by the bonsai shop.
Any way, I asked how much water I should give it and she said she was told to give it "some" and "often". And guessed 9 oz of water every day, but she's not sure, the shop assistant was new and wasn't sure her self she said only that it should never have dry soil, but I'd like better instructions.
The easiest thing to remember is to keep it moist, but not soaking wet. Don't measure the water or set up a watering schedule, just water it when the top is dry.
The real problem is that we don't know what kind of soil it has. It needs coarse soil so the water will drain easily out the holes in the bottom of the pot. So.......if the water DOES drain freely out the bottom, you can soak it well every time you water. If the water DOESN'T drain freely out the bottom, sprinkle the water on the top of the soil until it is moist. You might want to look at the Bonsai Care page on my site:
