Basic Coffee Maker
All sorts of people these day are "in to" coffee. The business has taken off hugely recently with the big chains growing and growing. Quality differs so much from brand to brand and store to store. You can get served by an experience barista in their 40's and get a decent cup, then you can get served by a college kid and find you're drinking brown water. To look at they're the same, bar their age difference, and they're given the same title "Barista". The big chains now call almost ever member of staff who isn't a cleaner a Barista regardless of training, experience or ability.
The guy who made you a good latte could well have been a Senior Barista, someone who has had far more extensive training and a better quality of training at that. A Basic Barista will know only very limited factors of being a Barista. The training they receive is narrow and they only really know the procedure of making the coffees on the menu board. Ask them to do a grind dose check or anything a touch harder and they'll be stumped. Bottom line, Barista basics wont get you a job, and wont mean a lot on you resume. If you are a basic Barista or want to be one, I recommend getting an extensive course because it will be worth it.
Next time you are in a coffee shop, the best way to spot a senior Barista will by his uniform as it should be different to the others.
