Can whole coffee beans get moldy?
I have a couple of bags of Starbucks coffee that are about 2 years past their "Best If Used By" date. They were vacuum sealed and stored properly. However when I open both bags up, I noticed some white "threads" on some of the coffee beans (in particular beans that have been broken). I've never seen that before on whole bean coffee, and don't know if that's normal or if that's mold? The only reason why I'm questioning it is because the coffee was still vacuum sealed and just opened for the first time.
Keep some used grounds for a week & you'll see the same thing. It's mold.
Brewing will kill the mold, but some molds produce a toxin no hot water will neutralize. Even if it's not toxic, 2yr old coffee would taste like cr** anyway. Throw it out & buy some more.
