There exists a common misapprehension that hydrogen fuel conversion kits are not for beginners. Nothing could be further from the truth. I still consider myself a mechanical novice, yet I have just finished installing my twelfth hydrogen fuel conversion kit.

In any case, there is little point in being put off HHO technology when your normal mechanic should be able to install a kit for under $150 in labor costs. He will find it handy if you supply the parts, but they are all readily available over the internet or at local plumbing and hardware stores. The materials necessary for a hydrogen fuel conversion kit cost around $120.

The Advantages of Hydrogen Fuel Conversion Kits

Leaving aside gas savings, many people install hydrogen fuel conversion kits simply for the tax breaks. Assuming you are a tax payer, the IRS gives a rebate of $2,000 on your tax bill if you have installed such a system. Make sure you keep all your receipts for materials, mechanic's labor (if you use one) and the manual you have used.

Depending on the make and model, gas savings range from 15% to 40%. You can do the math for your own vehicle. Bear in mind that all HHO kits are a hybrid system. You still need to use gas, just less of it.

Hydrogen fuel conversion kits are entirely safe. No hydrogen is stored on board the vehicle; it is produced on demand.

Torque is increased, as well as acceleration (to a point) and the engine is quieter.

Engine life is increased by up to 100%. Hydrogen is less demanding on the engine than gas.

All you need is a manual to take you or your mechanic through the design and installation process and $120 to $270 to spare.

How Hydrogen Fuel Conversion Kits Work

HHO technology is not that complicated. In layman's terms, an easy-to-make (or buy) catalyst is placed in high temperature resistant plastic housing. The housing (or casing) is filled with ordinary tap water. An electrical current from the car's battery is passed through the water which starts converting to HHO. One part of the hydrogen, often called hydroxy gas or Brown's gas, rises from the surface of the water and is drawn into the carburetor. It combines with the gasoline, reducing the need for so much gas and increasing efficiency.

Only about a quart of water is needed for say 150 miles, so the whole system is quite small and can easily be accommodated within the engine well. It requires virtually no maintenance, just a quick clean every thousand miles or so. In the improbable event that any problems are encountered it can be dismantled in the space of five minutes and the car will still run the same as it used to, without any need for modification.

All in all, for the time being at least, kits are a great low cost idea for saving on gas and improving vehicle performance. Although they are only a part solution, in the absence of any sensible alternative solution, it is likely that hydrogen fuel conversion kits will only grow in popularity.
