Coffee is basically a small red fruit that undergoes a lot of processing before it becomes the dry brown bean that we grind to make drinkable coffee. Coffee is one of the most popular drinks, but its taste can vary depending on how it is roasted and prepared. Green coffee which resembles dry pinto beans can be preserved for many days and still taste fresh when roasted and powdered. The flavor of coffee can be regulated according to your preferences and the best way to do that is by roasting coffee beans at home. This is a very easy process and does not require many devices either.
There are plenty of ways to roast coffee ranging from home devices that are made just for this purpose to the simplest of means using a mere roasting pan. Invariably all these methods give wonderful results and the best part is that there is not much money or time involved either.
In order to roast your own coffee there are certain fundamental requirements that have to be adhered to. They are -
- The coffee beans should be heated to a hotness of between 370 degrees and 540 degrees.
- The beans have to be stirred constantly for evenness and so that they are not burnt.
- Once roasted the coffee has to be cooled rapidly to check over roasting.
- The chaff of the baked beans should be carefully treated. Toss or stir the beans to get rid of excess chaff.
Though the process of roasting is quite simple it takes time to master the skill to get the same uniformity always. The last step in the coffee making process is the brewing. Roasting green coffee beans is a must as making a drink without roasting it would result in the beverage tasting extremely bitter and acidic making it absolutely useless as a drink.
Green coffee changes radically through the roasting procedures. All the juice in the coffee is forced out of the beans making it enlarges and dried out. The color of the beans becomes darker and by the end of the whole process the beans are lighter and bigger than when they were green. Remember that freshly roasted and ground coffee tastes the best. This is one of the main reasons that many people prefer to roast and grind their coffee beans at home because coffee is said to lose its best flavor within a week of being roasted and powdered.
