Coffee Pot Percolator
Every year when the weather starts to get really nice and the sun starts hanging around later into the evening, I get the camping bug. But before I head out to the great outdoors, I have to make sure that I'd be able to get my daily fix of caffeine.
French Press
There's a lot of different ways to make coffee outdoors, but using a French Press will create the best tasting cup of coffee. All you need is hot water, ground coffee and the French Press. Of course, there are some drawbacks like you'll need to find space for the French Press, but they now make ones that are lighter and shatter resistant.
It's just like using a French Press at home, the exact details vary depending on the size of the maker, but the basics are that ground coffee is added to the bottom, then hot water is poured and stirred. The water is allowed to saturate with the grounds for a few minutes, then the plunger is pushed down to separate out the grounds before it's poured into the cup.
If you're going to be gone for more than a couple of days, you should consider bringing along a manual coffee grinder and whole beans so that you can get fresh coffee the entire time away from civilization.
Percolator
This is actually how my parents would make coffee when we went camping when we were driving across the country or vacationing in the Adirondacks. W did it on a propane stove, but you can do it over a fire.
With a percolator, you'll need your coarse grounds and use between 1 and 1 ½ tablespoons of coffee for each size ounces of water. You let it perk until it reaches a the dark brown color. You can let it go longer or shorter, depending on how you like your coffee.
There is a risk that the grounds will make it into your cup, so you should give it time to settle.
Traditional Camping Coffee Methods
There's many different more traditional methods, you just have to choose one that works with what you have and how you like your coffee. Here's two ways that I've tried and can say worked to at least some degree.
Boil two quarts of water. Take it off the fire and add two hand fulls of grounds. It's not really a science, so use more or less depending on how strong you like your coffee. Let it steep for four minutes, then add a small amount of cold water to help settle the grounds. Then carefully pour the coffee into your cup, trying to keep as much of the grounds out of it.
Add six teaspoons of grounds into a pot with three pints of cold water on top. Put the pot on the fire and heat it until it starts to boil. Then take it off the fire and let it steep for a few minutes. Add a small amount of cold water so that the grounds settle out. This can make six cups.
